Canada renews investments for victims and survivors of crime

Ministers Fraser and Valdez announced renewed investments of over $50 million annually to support victims and survivors of crime. Additional details will be announced May 10-16 as we work with provincial, territorial, and community partners. Minister Fraser’s office will be reaching out to caucus members in ridings where projects have been funded.

This builds on our government’s work to better protect victims and survivors, including through the Protecting Victims Act (Bill C-16), one of the most consequential reforms of the Criminal Code in a generation to help stop intimate partner violence and femicide and keep kids safe from predators. It also delivers on our platform commitments to strengthen the Criminal Code, support the front lines, and to invest in long-term prevention.

Today’s funding will help strengthen services and supports across the country, including by helping provinces and territories enhance victim services, supporting victims and survivors of human trafficking, helping children and youth who have experienced abuse, and funding community-based services and initiatives.

As committee concludes its review of Bill C-16 today, we are calling on Parliament to move swiftly next week to the Senate. These are not abstract issues or political talking points. They affect victims, survivors, loved ones, and communities across Canada.
