Building More Homes in British Columbia

Canada’s new government is taking action to build more homes in British Columbia.

Far too many Canadians are struggling to find homes they can afford. Solving the housing crisis requires immediate action — bringing down costs, cutting red tape, and building homes faster.

That is why the federal government launched Build Canada Homes, a new agency dedicated to building affordable housing at scale and modernizing Canada’s homebuilding industry.

A New Partnership in B.C.

Build Canada Homes, in partnership with the Province of British Columbia through BC Housing, is committing to:

  • Build a minimum of 700 shovel-ready supportive and transitional homes, with construction beginning within the next 12 months.

  • Explore delivering at least 400 affordable rental homes.

Together, this represents 1,100 homes under this new partnership.

This marks the first phase of a shared commitment between Canada and British Columbia to accelerate affordable housing, leverage public lands, deploy flexible financial tools, and use modern construction methods to build thousands of homes for people who need them most.

Investing to Deliver

Through this partnership:

  • Build Canada Homes will contribute $170 million in capital funding.

  • The Province of British Columbia, through BC Housing, will contribute $640 million in capital and operating costs.

Federal funding remains subject to a signed contribution agreement, with provincial funding proceeding through standard approval processes.

Scaling Up Housing Across Canada

Launched in September 2025, Build Canada Homes is backed by $13 billion over five years to double the pace of housing construction nationwide.

Since its launch, the agency has:

  • Advanced six Direct Build projects across Canada.

  • Secured four major partnerships with provinces, municipalities, and Indigenous partners.

  • Supported initiatives representing more than 8,600 new homes to date.

The Government of Canada has also introduced the Build Canada Homes Act, legislation to formally establish the agency as a Crown corporation dedicated to affordable housing delivery.

Building Homes and Strengthening the Economy

Build Canada Homes prioritizes:

  • Sustainable Canadian materials

  • Strong domestic supply chains

  • Modern construction methods

  • Good jobs at every stage of the homebuilding process

By aligning with the federal government’s Buy Canadian strategy, we are increasing housing supply while strengthening Canada’s economy.

The Big Picture

Housing affordability requires urgency, partnership, and scale.

Through Build Canada Homes and our partnership with British Columbia, we are accelerating construction, delivering real homes for real people, and modernizing one of Canada’s most important industries.

That’s how we Build Canada Strong.
