Lowering methane emissions

Today, Minister Julie Dabrusin announced Enhanced Methane Regulations to reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector and landfills across Canada.

These new regulations mark a major step forward in cutting emissions while strengthening Canada’s economy.

The measures form a key pillar of Budget 2025’s Climate Competitiveness Strategy — providing certainty for investors, reducing emissions, and accelerating investment in clean energy and technology.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases:

  • Methane is responsible for about 30% of the global rise in temperature to date.

  • Over a 20-year period, one tonne of methane traps as much heat as roughly 84 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

  • Methane contributes to ground-level ozone, harming human health and damaging crops. Globally, methane emissions are linked to hundreds of thousands of premature deaths and significant agricultural losses each year.

According to the International Energy Agency, achieving a net-zero economy by 2050 requires strong, rapid, and sustained methane reductions worldwide.

Driving Investment and Certainty

These Enhanced Methane Regulations:

  • Provide long-term regulatory certainty for industry and investors.

  • Align Canada with global leaders working to eliminate methane emissions.

  • Complement commitments made by more than 50 global oil and gas companies — including Shell and Equinor — to near-eliminate methane emissions by 2030.

By setting clear rules and high standards, Canada is positioning itself to compete in a global economy that is rapidly shifting toward cleaner energy production.

The Big Picture

Investing in a clean future is both a moral imperative and one of the greatest economic opportunities of our time.

Reducing methane emissions protects public health, supports agricultural productivity, strengthens investor confidence, and reinforces Canada’s leadership on climate action.

This is about environmental responsibility and economic competitiveness — together.

That’s how we Build Canada Strong.
