Outlining Canada’s support to industries affected by tariffs
In light of our government’s strategy for combatting US tariffs on Canadian industries, here is a summary of these strategic investments and policies to ensure clarity and your ability to provide constituents with accurate information.
To date, our government has provided nearly $32.5 billion in tariff relief support to industries across Canada, through a suite of programs from Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI), Strategic Response Fund (SRF) and Business Development Bank of Canada.
To protect Canadian interests and ensure our businesses compete on a level playing field, our government imposed counter-tariffs on products targeted by the U.S. with the rate for each product matching the corresponding American rate. Other existing counter-tariffs against the U.S., including autos, remain in place.
Finally for companies that must import products from the U.S., the remission framework also remains available to provide tariff relief to impacted businesses:
Some goods qualify automatically under existing broad-based—or “horizontal”—remissions, including:
all goods used by identified public health, public safety and national security entities;
steel goods used in auto and aerospace manufacturing; and
non-steel goods used in Canadian manufacturing, processing, food and beverage packaging and agricultural production.
Any companies that would like to apply and that is not automatically covered may file an individual remission request where goods are unavailable domestically or exceptional circumstances could harm the economy. More than 1,800 individual requests have been received. Each is assessed on its merits, in consultation with domestic producers, with another tranche of decisions expected this fall.
