Supporting Canadian Steel in Domestic Markets

Canadian steel is helping build the future of this country. When Canadian steel succeeds, so does Canada.

Today, Minister MacKinnon announced the launch of the Commodities Sectoral Support Program, a $100 million rebate program to support the interprovincial transportation of eligible Canadian steel products by rail and marine transport.

The program will help offset the cost of shipping eligible Canadian steel and steel products within Canada, helping businesses reach new domestic markets and strengthen interprovincial trade.

Through the program, shippers will be able to receive a 50% rebate on eligible freight rail or marine shipping costs for eligible Canadian steel and steel products moving between provinces.

Shippers can apply for rebates as of August 10, 2026. The program will run until summer 2027, or until all available funding is claimed.

This initiative will support Canadian steel producers, strengthen domestic supply chains, and help strengthen a resilient Canadian economy.
