Building British Columbia Strong

What You Need to Know

Today, the Prime Minister, and the Premier of British Columbia, David Eby, signed the new Canada-British Columbia Cooperative Prosperity Agreement to build a stronger, more sustainable economy.

The agreement will advance major energy projects – including LNG Canada Phase 2, the Red Chris Mine Expansion, and the North Coast Transmission Line – as well as the trade infrastructure needed to ship Canadian energy and resources to new markets: upgrades to the Port of Vancouver-Roberts Bank trade corridor, the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project, and the Ports of Prince Rupert and Stewart.

These projects will be built in consultation and partnership with First Nations, creating unprecedented opportunities for First Nations co-ownership and economic benefits.

The agreement also includes major environmental commitments, including a new National Carbon Credit Framework, protections for whales and coastal ecosystems, and maintaining the North Coast tanker ban.

Canada’s new government will also support BC workers and strategic sectors by creating up to 100,000 skilled trades apprenticeships through the Team Canada Strong initiative and strengthening the BC lumber and steel industries.

Key Messages

  • British Columbia is a gateway to a more prosperous, sustainable, and inclusive Canada.

  • Last month, G7 Leaders called on Canada to provide the reliable energy the world needs. To seize this opportunity, Canada has to do things differently.

  • We need to move faster, build bigger, and work together. We must be ambitious, while building sustainably and inclusively.

  • To date, one-third of the initiatives being advanced through the Major Projects Office are in BC. Today, Prime Minister Carney and Premier Eby announced a landmark Canada-British Columbia Cooperative Prosperity Agreement to build on that momentum.

  • Today’s agreement will accelerate the projects that will unlock Canada’s full potential as a global energy superpower – projects in LNG, critical minerals, and clean power generation; it will upgrade and modernise the trade infrastructure that moves Canadian energy to new markets in Europe and Asia; and support workers and families in B.C.

  • As we build, we will build in the right way:

    • Sustainably, by protecting BC’s land, wildlife, and waters;

    • Inclusively, in partnership with First Nations;

    • In solidarity with B.C. workers through the Team Canada Strong initiative and through more than $630 million in funding for affordable childcare in BC so more British Columbians can participate in Canada’s growing economy;

    • And we will build Canadian by prioritising Canadian materials, including BC lumber, steel and critical minerals.
