Three Major Criminal Justice Bills Are Now Law

In less than a year, Canada’s new government has delivered one of the most ambitious criminal justice reform agendas in recent memory.

With the Combatting Hate Act (C-9), Bail and Sentencing Reform Act (C-14), and Protecting Victims Act (C-16) now law, our government has passed three major bills to strengthen Canada’s criminal laws and keep Canadians safe.

Together, these laws deliver:

  • Stronger hate crime protections.

  • Stricter bail, tougher sentences.

  • Better protections for victims and stronger laws to keep children safe from predators.

These reforms are part of our government’s commitment to strengthen the Criminal Code, support the front lines, and invest in long-term prevention so communities are safer over time.

For months, Conservatives delayed and obstructed measures that victims, survivors, law enforcement, premiers, mayors, and communities across the country have been calling for.

Communities were left waiting for stronger protections against hate. Victims and survivors were left waiting for stronger laws to help stop intimate partner violence before it turns deadly. Children were left waiting for stronger protections from predators. And Canadians were left waiting for stricter bail and tougher sentencing laws.

Conservatives tried to own these issues at the expense of real action. As threats evolve, our government will continue to move with urgency to strengthen Canada’s laws and keep Canadians safe.
