Letter to the People of Burnaby Central
Dear friends and neighbours,
Representing Burnaby Central in Parliament is a responsibility I take seriously. This is one of the most diverse ridings in the country, and I see that diversity as one of our greatest strengths. Every day, I meet people who bring their own histories, languages, and traditions — and who all share the same hope for a safe, affordable, and welcoming place to call home.
I was born in Taiwan and raised in Canada. My parents worked long hours to make ends meet, and I learned early what it’s like to stretch a paycheque, wait months for a medical appointment, and feel like you have to push twice as hard to be heard. Those experiences shaped my values and pushed me toward work that was about helping people — first as a lawyer, then as a social entrepreneur, and now as your MP.
I stand proudly for progressive values. That means fighting for a strong, inclusive economy that works for everyone — not just those at the top — and defending public education so every child has the same chance to succeed. It means protecting our environment so our parks, air, and water remain clean for generations to come. It means supporting newcomers, because immigration strengthens our community and fuels our future. And it means advancing equity — making sure everyone, no matter where they come from, who they love, or what language they speak, feels seen, heard, and valued. In Burnaby Central, that’s not just policy — it’s daily life, and it’s worth protecting.
In this role, my focus has been on the priorities I hear most often from you:
Affordability — tackling the cost of groceries, rent, and everyday essentials.
Social justice and inclusion — ensuring everyone feels respected and represented.
Housing — addressing high costs so people can find and keep a home.
Environment — protecting green spaces and building a sustainable future with good local jobs.
Celebrating & protecting our diversity — supporting cultural events, language programs, and policies that make sure every community feels respected.
In Ottawa, I serve on the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, and as Vice-Chair of the Parliamentary Pride Caucus. I’ve spoken out against anti-Asian hate, defended 2SLGBTQI+ rights, pushed for climate solutions, and worked to make immigration and justice systems fairer and easier to navigate.
Most of this work, though, happens right here at home — meeting with residents at the office, helping sort out immigration files, finding answers on pensions or taxes, or just listening when something isn’t working. My approach is simple: be available, listen first, and follow through.
Thank you for trusting me with this responsibility. I’ll keep showing up for Burnaby Central and working every day to make this a place where everyone can build a secure and hopeful future.
Wade Chang
